[ They'd been brought to this strange, sad place on a mission, and Bolin, carrying little but his determination and longing to return home, is going to finish it.
In baby steps. His current mission is less along the lines of united to species and causing the sun to rise, and more along the lines of finding the pet cat of a young boy who'd grown absolutely desolate looking for his pet in the village itself. Bolin, who still felt the keen absence of Pabu in the days since he'd been whisked away, couldn't just leave the boy to his sorrows.
He'd offered to look outside the village proper, the forest too dangerous for the boy to wander on his own, which brings him to his current predicament. It's darker in the forest, without the lanterns and lights of people and homes, and Bolin's only slightly starting to regret his decision.
But he perseveres. ]
Buttons? [ The cat's name. ] Here Buttons! If you come out I'll give you a nice big fish!
[ i have like no idea why fai is out in the woods but maybe he's just taking a shortcut
In the deathly silence of the forest, even the slightest sound - any sound that sat above the humming of the crickets in the grasses - seemed to amplify by ten. Bolin was a bit of a distance away, but before Fai can see him, he hears what he's calling out. 'Buttons...?' From the mention of fish, he's assuming the younger boy has lost his cat. Poor thing. With how difficult it was to even see the road ahead of them, he doesn't think finding that cat again will be an easy task at all.
The branches of the trees around them rustle, casting large, creeping shadows in the illumination of their lanterns, and something howls in the far distance. There's an eeriness to the entire scene, especially with how quiet it all is. Fai isn't bothered by it in the slightest, however. He walks up from behind, the glow of his lantern lighting up the spot they're both standing in, and speaks playfully. ]
Maybe she'll come out if you give a meow ~? [ i hate tildes. also this is not legit advice at all ]
[ Bolin spins around, not unlike a ninja, one foot hovering in the air in alarm and hands raised like he's ready to bring down a karate chop.
But he doesn't. ]
—Oh. Hey, Fai.
[ Just the noodly fellow that he'd met in the town a few days ago. He'd seemed like a pretty nice guy, if a little flighty. There's definitely worse people that Bolin could run into, alone and wandering the woods in the dark. All kinds of dire ends he could meat, and nubile young man consumed by monsters for his youth and energy.
He props his hands on his hips, finally coming around to contemplate the advice. ]
[ don't go out without supervision next time, bolin
Most would scoff at a nonsensical suggestion like that, especially since it was coming from a fully-grown man. Kurogane certainly would have. Not only would meowing out loud in the woods make them look ridiculous, but there was no guarantee it would even work. Not all cats responded to such sounds. Most were more likely to ignore them. He shouldn't be encouraging innocent young boys to do stupid things in the dark, scary woods but Fai has never been the best role model....
He knows this is bad advice but he also thinks it would be funny. Sorry Bolin. ]
You won't know until you try it, will you? [ No, it's probably a stupid idea. Still, Fai opts to give Bolin a demonstration. In the sweetest, cutesiest voice he can manage, he calls out into the woods. ] Meow! Meow!
[ Bolin's a pretty optimistic person. His ideas tend to range from inane to totally unhelpful, but he indulges in them anyway because he likes to have fun. Except that right now, as he watches Fai meow into the dark, even he's a little dubious.
He gives it a shot - ]
Meow... meow.
[ With considerably less enthusiasm. He turns away from the tall blonde to meow into the woods, eyes searching for the movement of something small and cute, trying to listen for an answering call. He doesn't hear anything. There's a lot Bolin wishes he could do with his bending - metalbending most prominently, but right now he wishes he had some of that seismic sense. ]

I don't think we're fooling the cat.
